According to police, the boy got into the family car around 5 p.m. at an unobserved time. The boy must have put the automatic transmission on idle, causing the car to roll down the slight incline and crash into the Frschnitzbach passing in front. The child was aborted.
When the mother was looking for the boy a few minutes later – at first she suspected he was in the house where he had last played – she finally discovered the car in the creek bed after a search of the house and raised the alarm. The search for the two-year-old’s relatives was unsuccessful. Rescuers, who were also alerted, discovered the immobile boy about a kilometer downstream in Frschnitzbach.
After attempting to revive the boy, he was transferred to the children’s clinic in Graz in a rescue helicopter. There he died of his injuries that night. 22 firefighters and a team of emergency doctors participated in the rescue operation. The family was cared for by two crisis intervention teams from the Red Cross.
