Until now, Donald Trump has been able to write whatever he wants on Twitter without fear of being banned, even if he breaks the rules. But that should change soon.
Starting on January 20, the rules will apply to Donald Trump as well, at least on Twitter. Because with the end of his presidency, Trump will lose the privileges he has enjoyed so far in short message service. Twitter confirmed this to the technology portal “The Verge”.
Anyone who violates Twitter’s guidelines threatens to be blocked. Trump and other prominent politicians are exempt from these rules. Because such tweets can serve the “public interest”, as Twitter writes on its website: “For this reason, in rare cases we may leave a tweet from an elected representative or government official that would otherwise be removed.”
Twitter markiert Trump-Tweets
Instead, Twitter is content to flag problematic tweets. The short message service has done this more frequently in the past with tweets from Trump. For example, when the president of the United States spoke of possible electoral fraud. Or when he claimed he had survived a coronavirus infection Make those affected immune. And especially on election night, Twitter marked many messages from Trump with warnings. Many of his messages were found to be false on fact-checking. More about this read here.
However, on January 20 the Trump presidency will end and, therefore, his VIP status. From that moment on, the current president of the United States threatens to be expelled from Twitter if he violates the guidelines again. This would also mean that Trump would lose access to nearly 90 million Twitter users who follow him on short message service.
