Hundreds of trucks arrive in French Calais: military is supposed to help clear traffic jams
After the resumption of freight and travel traffic between Britain and France, the traffic jam around Dover is gradually clearing. Hundreds of trucks arrived in the French coastal city of Calais on Friday after being stranded in the area around the British port city for days. Meanwhile, the British government moved soldiers to Dover. The military should help with better resolution of traffic jams.
“A thousand trucks came from Dover yesterday,” Calais port operator Benoît Rochet said on Friday. On Christmas Day there were 550 trucks coming from Great Britain at 10am (CET). If this rhythm continues, the traffic jam will disappear on Saturday. In all, up to 10,000 truck drivers were stranded after France imposed strict traffic and transit restrictions on Sunday.
After a deal between Paris and London, rail and ferry traffic slowly resumed on Wednesday. However, drivers often have to show a negative corona test, which should not be older than 72 hours.
More than 50 countries had restricted entry from the UK since Sunday after a new, potentially more contagious variant of the coronavirus emerged there. According to a media report on Friday, Russia also imposed a two-week self-isolation for travelers from Britain.
