There was a violent explosion in Nashville on Friday. A trailer exploded. The police speak of a deliberate act.
At least three people were slightly injured in a trailer explosion in downtown Nashville, Tennessee. They were taken to hospitals, a spokesman for rescuers said on Friday. Investigators assume a deliberate act, as police spokesman Don Aaron said.
The detonation caused “significant” damage to property, according to authorities. Images from local television station WKRN showed damaged houses and debris on the street. The images also showed broken windows in buildings farther from the blast.
The police largely cordoned off the city center. FBI officials from the US Federal Police opened an investigation. Police searched the area with bomb-sniffing dogs to rule out possible new explosions. US Interim President Donald Trump had been informed of the blast, said a White House spokesman, Judd Deere.
Police officer suffers hearing damage
Police spokesman Aaron said officers arrived at the scene around 5:30 a.m. after reports of alleged shooting. They had alerted the police bombing unit to the suspicious caravan and asked residents to leave their homes through the rear entrances of the buildings, Aaron said. A police officer suffered hearing damage from the blast, he said.
Police spokesman Aaron told the media at noon (local time) that a tape from the trailer had warned of the explosion. A voice on the tape said: “This trailer will explode in 15 minutes.” After that, the voice on the tape asked to leave the area.
“It looks like a bomb has exploded”
Mayor John Cooper said on Twitter that police and federal forces are now investigating the exact cause of the explosion. “It appears that a bomb has exploded,” Cooper said in a statement broadcast on WKRN. The local disaster control spoke of an “intentional bomb incident”. WKRN reporters said they felt the shock of the blast in their downtown studio.
Dozens of users on social media had taken photos and videos of black smoke over the city center after the blast around 6:30 a.m. on Friday morning (local time). Initially, several sources of fire could be seen.
