Traffic light crash for 100 ski areas

Vienna. As reported, the Crown Commission has changed the traffic lights in another ten districts to orange. Including five in Lower Austria, but also Austria’s main ski regions in the west – with Landeck and Schwaz, two more in Tyrol are orange. That means: ski areas like Ischgl / Samnaun, Kaunertal, St. Anton am Arlberg (Landeck district) have again been classified as “high risk”.

Also the Schwaz region with the Zillertal Arena, Gerlos, the Hintertux Glacier, Mayrhofen. Even the ski area around the world famous main city of Kitzbühel is no longer green, but yellow (medium risk). In Vorarlberg, the commission has changed two regions to orange.

• Lower Austria: Krems-Stadt, Krems-Land, Wr.-Neustadt-Stadt, Gänserndorf, Korneuburg, Gmünd, Melk, Mödling Neunkirchen, Waidhofen / Thaya, Zwettl

• Tyrol: Landeck, Schwaz, Innsbruck-Stadt, Kufstein

• Vorarlberg: Rheintal / Walgau region

• Burgenland: Eisenstadt, Eisenstadt area, Rust, Güssing, Neusiedl

• Carinthia: town of Villach

• Lower Austria: St. Pölten, Baden, Bruck / Leitha, Lilienfeld, Mistelbach, Scheibbs, Tulln, Wr. Neustadt (Land)

• Upper Austria: Linz (city and country), Steyr (city), Wels (city and country), Eferding, Freistadt, Gieskrichen, Ried / Innkreis, Vöcklabruck

• Salzburg: Salzburg (city), Hallein, St. Johann / Pongau

• Styria: Graz (city and surroundings), Deutschlandsberg, Leibnitz, Liezen, Murau, Hartberg-Fürstenfeld

• Tyrol: Imst, Innsbruck-Land, Kitzbühel

But it’s positive: Red is not yet a district with us

Alarming. Red is not yet a region / city in Austria. But if the number of Covid cases continues to rise so rapidly in the Orange regions of the Alps, winter tourism is at stake. The number of new infections is simply too high.

That is why German Health Minister Jens Spahn has already warned against winter holidays with us (see below). Belgium, the Netherlands and Denmark have also issued travel advisories.

Alarming. Last year, 78 percent of winter guests had come from abroad. In Lech am Arlberg there were even ski fans from 23 countries. 73 million overnight stays were made, 15 billion were delivered. Winter tourism is essential for all of Austria. In Arlberg, a decrease of around 30 percent is now expected: “Because fewer people will be traveling,” says Director of Tourism Hermann Fercher from Lech / Zürs (Vorarlberg).

Ski crash: Germany now warns about all of Tyrol

Berlin / Bern. This is a serious blow for ski tourism: due to the rapid increase in the number of infections, our neighbor has also put the state of Tyrol on the red list. So far, Austria has already submitted to Vienna and Vorarlberg.

The Czech Republic and Luxembourg were classified as risk areas. From the German point of view, 15 of the 27 EU countries are at least partially corona risk areas, Spain, the Czech Republic and Luxembourg are even fully so. Poland is the only one of Germany’s nine neighboring countries that has not yet been affected.

Confederates. After Vienna, Switzerland has placed Lower Austria and Upper Austria on the risk list. “It must now be our goal to reduce the number of infections and to eliminate travel warnings,” says ÖVP Minister of Tourism Elisabeth Köstinger.
