At the moment it is only a consideration, put to discussion by the works councils of many companies based in the industrial sector. To avoid traffic jams for the commuters, who are mostly their employees, they want to clear the Untere Donaulände jam zone by relocating the bus stop to Lentos.
The city of Linz is now examining this and, according to media reports, the city government can apparently envision relocating the bus bay in the direction of Lentos as early as spring 2021. This, in turn, puts a cyclists on the highest alert. Because the pavement and the bike path literally get in the way to move the bus stop.
“It can’t be like that,” says Gerhard Fischer, chairman of the Upper Austria cycling lobby. Because this would prove once again that the “great Linz city advertisements”, the keyword “capital of cycling and climate”, cannot be trusted.
Therefore, the cycling lobby demands that all planning ideas for the relocation of the bus stop and the effects on cycling be disclosed immediately. “We will no longer accept any deterioration and will fight it with all possible means,” continued Fischer.
In this context, the Linz Greens point out that the mitigation measure for private transport should not cause public transport to slow down and delay. The KPÖ-Linz advocates a separate bus lane on the Untere Donaulände to Kaisergasse instead of relocating the bus stop, so that only “the trees would be sacrificed, as well as the footpath and the bike path”.
Basically, the situation in the Los Lentos bus stop area has not been resolved satisfactorily for years. After entering the bus stop, it becomes difficult for buses to rejoin the flow of traffic. Also, there is only one free lane due to the crosswalk and lane divider. This bottleneck means that at peak times, especially in the afternoon, almost nothing happens.
If relocating the bus bay will really solve this jam problem is another sheet of paper.
