“I am very happy that we did not give in to pressure from half of Europe to close our ski areas,” said regional tourism adviser Jochen Danninger (ÖVP) at an online press conference on Wednesday. In the days of Corona, however, it must be clear “that our tracks are under international observation.”
So, Danninger says, it’s important to avoid crowds at all costs. Elevator operators have prepared for this too. Of course, it will also be about the personal responsibility of the guests.
According to Danninger, there are “more than three million potential guests” in the vicinity of the roughly 30 mountain railways and chair lifts. Many winter sports enthusiasts would probably ski in Lower Austria for the first time this year, because a trip to the great ski areas of the western federal states is too far for a day trip. The Provincial Council has also indicated that the guests of the slopes must behave in a particularly responsible manner, “so as not to overload our hospitals even more”.
“Ski areas work closely together to prevent Covid-19,” emphasized Michael Reichl, chairman of the representative for cable cars at the Lower Austrian Chamber of Commerce. The goal is clear and uniform rules of conduct so that guests can find their way around.
According to Isabella Hinterleitner, project manager of the Bergbahnen-Beteiligungsgesellschaft in Lower Austria, a not insignificant problem due to the closed catering has been clarified. Sanitary facilities in ski areas would be available in sufficient quantity, he said. They will be those of catering establishments where direct access is possible, or additional capacities will be rented.
The Lower Austria / Vienna Mountain Rescue Service has completed around 500 winter missions in each of the past seasons. According to national manager Matthias Cernusca, the helpers are equipped with a special Covid concept.
