Rapid avoided his second loss in just four days. After the CL against Gent, Yusuf Demir saved the Hütteldorfer 1-1 at Sturm Graz.
The only 17-year-old had made up for Jon Gorenc Stankovic’s Styrian lead in the 68th minute with his first Bundesliga goal, saving Hütteldorfer from the first Bundesliga bankruptcy.
Storm sets the tone
In front of 3,000 spectators at the Merkur Arena in Graz, the hosts took the match from the start, leaving little room for Hütteldorfer. Bekim Balaj barely forgot in the eleventh minute. Andreas Kuen pushed a Jakob Jantscher cross just past the green and white arc in the 50th minute.
Gorenc Stankovic did better just two minutes later, heading off an unrestricted Jantscher corner kick to make the well-deserved 1-0 over the line (52). Quick goalkeeper Richard Strebinger didn’t look good, losing on the wing.
Iron premiere
The Austrian record champions created little offensive danger over long stretches. A harmless shot from Ercan Kara, easily intercepted by goalkeeper Jörg Siebenhandl (36th), was the most dangerous for a long time.
That only changed in the 68th minute, when the Hütteldorfer scored 1: 1 out of nowhere. Kara played ideally for shooting star Demir who ran, who shot a thoughtful to compensate. The first Bundesliga goal in the seventh game for the 17-year-old.
With the tie behind them, Hütteldorfer again pushed everything forward in the final phase. Leo Greiml headed home victory in the 84th minute and took a corner from Srdjan Grahovac just inside the goal. The long and discreet Taxi Fountas missed in the 92nd minute on the strong guardian of the storm.
With that fixed the points split, Hütteldorfer lost the championship lead to serial champions Salzburg. Sturm moved up to fifth place.
