Too many women in management positions: Paris has to pay a fine

Mayor Anne Hidalgo on Tuesday spoke of an “absurd” decision related to the announcement of 16 leadership positions two years ago. Of these, “eleven were for women and only five for men,” the socialist politician scoffed.

The Ministry of Public Administrations invokes the rule that at least 40 percent of such positions must be of one gender. In the Paris tender, 69 percent of the posts were for women and only 31 percent for men. Overall, the proportion of women in managerial positions in the city of Paris is 47 percent.

Hidalgo said she was secretly “pleased” with the fine. She will deliver the check personally along with her deputies and other women in managerial positions.

However, the Ministry’s decision sees itself as an “irresponsible and dangerous” step. “To one day reach parity, we must accelerate so that more women than men are appointed,” he said.
