The establishment of a temporary camp on the island of Lesbos continued on Saturday night. “Everybody has to go there. This is the only way we can provide them correctly,” Greek Deputy Migration Minister Giorgos Koumoutsakos told the Athens Skai news channel.

The head of the branch of the aid organization Doctors of the World, Dimitris Patestos, agreed: “The provisional field must work as quickly as possible,” he told the German press agency.

Numerous migrants told reporters at the scene that they did not want to go to the makeshift camp and saw the situation as an opportunity to enforce their departure. “We want freedom. We want to go to Germany, not to the countryside,” say many. Over and over again, small demonstrations spontaneously take place in which migrants chant “freedom, freedom.” Thousands of migrants, including children, spent the fourth consecutive night on the streets. Humanitarian and government organizations are trying to distribute food and water, as Greek television (ERT) showed.

The camp will be set up in a Greek army target practice area. The site is just a few kilometers north of the island’s capital, Mytilene, on the coast.

There are still dozens of people infected with corona among the thousands of migrants. At least 35 migrants tested positive before the great fire. They hid after the fire.
