The accident occurred in the second qualifying stage at the exit of the 180-degree turn and at the entrance of Turn 4. It was precisely on this part of the route, says Vettel, that he had “some problems” with his vehicle. “So I tried to take a little more risk.” And then came his departure.
Vettel turned outside and hit the right front with his car. The impact itself “wasn’t that bad,” he says on ‘Sky’.
Too much risk in the first sector?
“I was still trying to avoid the risers to avoid an impact, so initially I released the brakes. That did not work. I did not make it, I lost the car. So maybe I have too much Pressure was applied and it was too fast,” explains the Ferrari driver.

Luck in misfortune: Charles Leclerc, Vettel’s teammate at Ferrari, followed Vettel closely, but was able to avoid the car crash. Leclerc’s reaction on the radio: “Oh God, it was close!” In fact, Leclerc still has some debris from Vettel’s car.
Vettel’s ray of hope fades in qualifying
As soon as he got out of the cockpit, Vettel helped with the cleanup job at the crash site – the four-time Formula 1 world champion scooped up the debris from the front wing.
Vettel was in qualifying with P15 in Q2, just behind Leclerc. After his first attempt in Q2, he placed 14th in the end, he was P15 on the starting grid for the 2020 Russian Grand Prix in Sochi (follow the live Formula 1 ticker here!)
And that after an update to the front of the SF1000 had given him courage, as confirmed. In the third free practice session he was even ahead of Leclerc. “But I had trouble qualifying again,” says Vettel, “especially in the first sector.” So where did you have your accident in Q2?
