There have been hardly any changes in the average living space in Austria during the last 15 years. Single households are on the rise.

Considerable differences in the federal states
As the analysis with the Statistics Austria data shows, the average size of apartments in Austria is 100 square meters, but there are considerable differences between the various federal states.
The ranking is led by Burmese with an average living space of 124 m², followed by low Austrians with 115.9 m², tall Austrians with 109.2 m², Carinthians with 107.8 m² and Styrians with 105.6 m². . The Viennese come last with an average of 73.7 m². In 2004, the average living space in Austria was 96.4 m².
“It is interesting that the average size of apartments in Austria has hardly changed in the last 15 years, but the living space per person, with the exception of Vienna, has increased. The highest proportion of individual households in Vienna
In the analysis of household size, that is, how many people are registered in one of the around 3.95 million main residences, the one-person household clearly leads with around 1.5 million (37.5 percent), followed for the household of two with about 1.2 Million (30.3 percent). Therefore, households with three (580,000), four (450,000) or five or more people (240,000) are a minority.
The share of one-person households was highest in Vienna in 2019 at 44.3 percent. The place goes to Carinthia (38.3 percent), closely followed by Salzburg with around 36.5 percent in third place. The lowest proportion of single-person households can be found in Burgenland at 31.9 percent.
