For Dominic Thiem, on Sunday (not before 3pm / Sky Sport Austria live and on the LIVE ticker) at the ATP Finals, the repeat of the previous year’s final is right at the start of the tournament.
Thiem wants to show his best tennis right away against Stefanos Tsitsipas, but with the US Open title behind them, Lower Austria has gained even more confidence on the hard court.
“The results from the end of 2019 until today have been better on hard court and most of my game fits better than on clay,” Thiem explained.
“I feel almost the same on both surfaces.”
Since his Masters 1000 triumph at Indian Wells 2019, the Lower Austrian has also triumphed in Beijing and Vienna in the same year.
Then came the final of the ATP Finals a year ago and last January the narrowly lost final at the Australian Open. And finally the triumph at Flushing Meadows. “Now I feel almost the same on both surfaces,” Thiem confirmed.
The rope as a decisive factor
One of the many reasons for the increase is probably the configuration that has now been found. “It took me a long time to find the perfect racket and the perfect string. The racket has been good for me for three or four years, and I have been playing with the string for a long time,” Thiem said in the run-up to his first visit to London.
Thanks to the development of a new tennis string by its manufacturer Babolat, it “now fits perfectly” too.
Thiem also revealed that he no longer changes his tension at all, regardless of the altitude he plays at. “I always want to play the same. If I strike a stronger string and then I don’t play the first balls in the ‘half court’, then I go crazy.”
