The new curator should have verified the inventory of the art collection in May. He found that three 17th-century firearms and 47 photographs had disappeared from the warehouse. As a result, a complaint was filed, making Abbot Ambros Ebhard in front of the “Kronen Zeitung”. During the investigation, a confrere was attacked. The man is said to have admitted to selling the art objects in order to raise money for a possible restoration of other works. The collection includes 2,200 paintings, 70 icons, 2,000 copper engravings, and art and armory objects. The most famous piece, however, is Tassilo’s chalice.

Half of the works of art have now returned to the Kremsmünster Abbey. The Federal Criminal Police Office is still searching for the remaining 25 works of art. “Theft is a breach of trust in our community that must have consequences,” said Abbot Ambros Ebhard. Now we will wait to see how the judiciary will decide.
