Vienna virologist Judith Aberle warns of a second wave of virus and explains how one can be prevented in Austria.

According to the study of the dark figure, a maximum of 11,000 people in Austria are said to have carried the coronavirus in late April. An earlier study assumed that 60,000 people were infected. With 0.15 percent of the population, the country is far from collective immunity. Even in severely affected areas, a maximum of 4.7 percent of the population had the virus.

Judith Aberle of MedUni Vienna says: “The virus is there and can spread again.” This is precisely the reason why it is important to continue wearing protective masks and maintain safe distances. According to the virologist at ORF “ZiB 2”, this could ensure that the infection is contained and that a second wave does not necessarily have to come.

“The measures were justified”

“From a virological point of view, taking action at an early stage was warranted,” Aberle says of the government’s strict restrictions. Austria is now in a good situation and can regulate measures by controlling the number of infections. Quarantine has broken many chains of infection.

The virologist also warns not only to rely on the number of studies, but also to pay attention to the quality of the evidence and the results. It could happen that positive values were tested incorrectly and the number of tests overall was very low.
