Ready-made vegetarian or vegan products are growing in popularity. But product names like “veggie burger,” “tofu schnitzel,” or “seitan steak,” which are based on meat products, could soon end.
At least for most of them.
The EU Parliament is expected to vote Thursday on a possible ban on the marketing of meat substitute products that are advertised under such names. Therefore, meat and meat products must be protected, which means the end of “soy sausage”.
Because if it says sausage, there should only be sausage inside, if it is to the majority of MEPs. The same applies to “vegan schnitzel” and Co.
Curious, but very different for the popular veggie burger – why?
Veggie burger originally refers to hamburger that is known to be topped with ground beef. But minced meat belongs to the genre of “meat preparation”, and this is not protected by its name. With which Simone Schmiedtbauer, member of ÖVP EU, can confirm: “The veggie burger will stay.”
