AUSTRIA LOWER
During the second half of the night, snowfall began last night, beginning in the southern wort, forest and industrial districts. The amount of fresh snow was approximately 5 to 6 cm. In the eastern basins of Weinviertel and Vienna, rainfall fell as freezing rain.
Around 1,000 Lower Austrian highway service employees have been on the nearly 14,000 kilometers of the state road network with 370 of their own cleaning and polishing vehicles since the early hours of the morning. In addition, around 280 rented winter service vehicles are in circulation for the Lower Austrian road service.
Due to the COVID situation, far-reaching preventive and protective measures have been taken. Each of the 58 road maintenance depots works with two separate teams, among other things, to be able to guarantee optimal maintenance of the road network even under COVID conditions.
Currently, there are predominantly snowy, muddy, and salty roads throughout the country. The Lower Austrian Road Service asks road users to be especially careful and recommends adapting speed and driving behavior to the winter road conditions and maintaining appropriate distances.
Chain service (starting at 7:30 am) for 3.5 ton vehicles and a driving ban for articulated vehicles applies on the B21 through Gschaid and on the B23 through Lahnsattel. Chains are also mandatory for 3.5 tonne vehicles on the B21 over Rohrersattel and on the L5217 between Kirchberg / P. and Lilienfeld.
According to the weather forecast, snowfalls in Waldviertel and Mostviertel will continue into the morning. In Wein- und Industrieviertel it can snow until early afternoon and about 2 to 5 cm of fresh snow is expected.
CARINTHIA
In Carinthia, the onset of winter on Thursday night caused numerous obstacles to traffic. Almost all high mountain roads were only passable with winter gear, for the most part there was a chain requirement for all vehicles, as announced by the ÖAMTC in the morning. Up to 12 inches of fresh snow made road conditions very difficult at times.
The A2 Südautobahn in Arnoldstein in the direction of Vienna had to be closed in the early hours of the morning after a truck accident, there was also a total closure in Möllltal-Bundesstraße near Kolbnitz (Spittal / Drau district) due to trucks being jammed. The A10 motorway from Tauern in the Katschberg tunnel in the direction of Villach will be closed, according to the police, an accident had occurred.
SALZBURG
In Salzburg it snowed for the first time this winter, even at low altitudes. This shouldn’t have come as a surprise to motorists across the country. As an employee of the state fire brigade command told the APA in the morning, the smooth and muddy roads initially did not lead to any operations. According to ÖAMTC, snow chains are mandatory on the highest highways in the state, especially for vehicles over 3.5 tons.
The Radstädter Tauern, the Filzensattel and the Pass Thurn are affected, on the Katschberg the chain obligation also applies to cars. The snowfall should subside and stop in the course of the morning, in the northern part of the country you can even expect some sun in the afternoon.
