For Sebastian Kurz, the crown figures have already reached “very worrying levels” in several federal states. To avoid a second lockdown, more stringent measures are necessary.
In view of the growing number of corona infections in Austria, Federal Chancellor Sebastian Kurz (ÖVP) addressed the federal states with a written appeal on Thursday. In several of them the figures had reached “very worrying levels”. Stronger measures are urgently needed there.
Regional tightening should prevent a second lockdown
“We are currently seeing a massive spread of the virus in some cities and countries in Europe, which makes it necessary to combat it with very drastic measures,” said the Chancellor in the text available to the APA: “It must be clear to everyone in the country: The situation is serious. ” A new infection rate like that of the neighboring country of the Czech Republic would have fatal effects on employment and businesses, would push the health system to its limits and would de facto cause a second lockdown.
“The point now is for the particularly affected federal states to selectively tighten the regions, as after a certain time the authorities of the affected federal states will not be able to conduct rapid tests or trace specific contacts,” Kurz emphasized.
Austrians should take the situation seriously
He also addressed the population: “I appeal to all the people of the country to take the situation seriously and support the measures.” The next few weeks would decide whether the spread of the virus can be slowed and contained, or whether the corona pandemic will cause far greater damage to the country’s healthcare system, jobs and businesses.
