Parallel to the gradual opening of stores planned after Easter, home sports will also spring from his Corona health dream. At least, that’s how it looks with Markus Achleitner, the regional council responsible for business, tourism and sport. The first step is to reopen the Olympic Center in the Gugl after Easter, flanked by hygiene measures such as separate training sessions or showering at home, Achleitner says. “Allow professional and world-class athletes to re-practice their profession.”
However, the ball is a higher league for Sports Minister Werner Kogler. I would like to comment on the sporting aspects of the crisis in the coming days. According to Achleitner, coordination between the federal and state governments is very close, thanks to video conferences, sometimes even closer than before. “We need a sports comeback plan,” the regional council hopes the guidelines will be as clear as possible in the coming weeks. One must be aware of the fact that the current “driving sight” may, in the case of an increasing number of infections, include a withdrawal of any relief. “Health is the referee,” explains Achleitner.
Help not only for the greats
The federal aid package totaling € 38 billion has set aside several hundred million for sports. Its concrete use and what really counts as a difficulty in sport is still unclear. What is certain is that Upper Austria wants to help its athletes and clubs with an additional 2.5 million euros. Achleitner: “If we don’t put something in the federal government, we want to have a pot with which we can help as a country.” Therefore, the criteria for this pot can only be specified once the area of application of federal funds has been defined. Achleitner, however, tries to emphasize that the crisis is as dramatic for small clubs as it is for large ones, so support does not depend on a club’s financial strength.
The measures should now start quickly. Problematic cases could be registered through an online portal. At first glance, comparable to the economy, it is about ensuring liquidity. “That is why we have ordered the funding department to pay the funding immediately whenever possible,” says Achleitner.
