Vienna (PK) In recognition of his contribution to the further development of relations between Hungary and Austria, parliamentary cooperation and his activities for a broader perception of Hungary’s positions in European politics, the President of the National Council, Wolfgang Sobotka, received an award today from the hands of his counterpart László Kövér; the Commander’s Cross with the Star of the Hungarian Order of Merit. Sobotka thanked him for continuing to promote bilateral and parliamentary cooperation in the future.

Parliamentary exchange and maintenance of Austro-Hungarian relations is a priority for Austria, both on the basis of neighborhood and common historical solidarity, said the president of the National Council. The prerequisite for this is exchange and dialogue at all levels. “All questions must always be clarified in the dialogue,” Sobotka said, referring to Hungary’s border management in relation to the pandemic.

The working discussion also tried to bring the Western Balkans closer to the EU in relation to the scholarship program started by the Austrian Parliament and look back at the IPU virtual world conference.

Prior to this, the president of the Federal Council, Andrea Eder-Gitschthaler, also met for an exchange with the president of the Hungarian National Assembly, in which the main focus was the mutual experiences of crisis management of COVID-19. Eder-Gitschthaler highlighted the importance of neighborhood coexistence at the political and administrative level, as it is being promoted between the two parliaments, for example through a twinning project, to combat the long-term economic consequences. The two agreed that the role of national parliaments in the EU should be expanded and the commitment to EU enlargement in the Western Balkans should move forward. (End) fan
