Wild scenes in front of the Vienna Chancellery: armed with a machete, a suspect (33) wanted to enter Parliament on Tuesday morning; police officers were able to put him on Ballhausplatz.
“He was not without danger, but we still don’t know anything about his possible crime plans,” oe24 learned from investigators. The Austrian citizen (33), armed with a machete, came from the Ringstrasse in Vienna with his vehicle to Ballhausplatz. Passers-by, whom he asked for directions to the parliament, appeared suspicious to the man, who alerted police.
Detained directly in front of the chancellor’s office
At Ballhausplatz, the suspect was reportedly sitting on the ground in front of the chancery. There, a few meters from the offices of federal chancellor Sebastián Kurz and federal president Alexander Van der Bellen, the man was put down by police officers and overwhelmed after massive resistance. So far, the executive has been unable to say anything about the motive for a planned crime or attack.

The chancellor and parliamentarians were not at risk
Chancellor Sebastián Kurz was not in the official office at Ballhausplatz when the author was arrested. His spokesman on the phone with oe24: “The chancellor was not at risk. He was not at home.” Nor would it be possible for the suspect to enter the interior of the chancellery: police and security officers would prevent any unauthorized access, and there is also a state-of-the-art security door. The Federal Chancellery currently has no further information on the possible plans of the suspect armed with a machete.
The author also reportedly failed to gain access to parliament: security officers are monitoring the security gate at the Josefsplatz entrance.
