The organic trend continued in the crisis

The trend towards organic products continued during the crisis. There was a real rush for organic boxes full of fruits and vegetables during and after closing. However, Agrarmarkt Austria (AMA) and Bio Austria hope that the changes in consumption caused by the coronavirus pandemic will normalize again over time.

Growth will stabilize, but perhaps stabilize at a higher level, said Bio Austria president Gertraud Grabmann. Many new subscriptions would be kept for Bio Boxes. The rush for boxes being delivered to the front door in some cases has even led to a freeze on new customer intake, Grabmann said.

10 percent mark

“We see organic growth in two ways,” AMA Managing Director Michael Blass said at Monday’s press conference. During the crisis, consumers were more concerned than ever about the intrinsic value of food. In June, the organic share of grocery shopping passed the 10 percent mark for the first time. On average, almost € 100 per household was spent on organic food in the first half of the year.
