Difficult times for the national tourism industry. The pandemic is particularly affecting city and conference hotels. In some federal states, the number of overnight stays increased slightly in July.
AUSTRIA. The number of overnight stays in Austria in the first half of the summer season (May to July) was 21.52 million, 44.6 percent below the previous year’s level, as Statistics Austria announced on Friday. One of the main reasons was crown-related business closures in tourism until the end of May and travel restrictions. For July 2020, the second most important month of the summer season, interim results from Statistics Austria show 15.50 million overnight stays, a decrease of 17.4 percent compared to July 2019. The large decrease in guests foreigners (-28.7 percent to 9.93 million) protected Austrian guests (+15.2 percent to 5.57 million). The German guests also saved Austria’s tourism industry from even greater collapse. The number of overnight stays by German guests alone fell 4.3 percent to 6.73 million in July.
These federal states benefit slightly
Large regional differences were recorded between federal states in July: the decrease in overnight stays was greatest in Vienna (-73.3%), followed by Lower Austria (-22%), Upper Austria (-16.7%), Salzburg (-21.5 percent), Tyrol (-14.3 percent) and Vorarlberg (-10.8 percent). On the other hand, Burgenland (+ 4.1 percent), Styria (+2.0 percent) and Carinthia (+0.1 percent) were satisfied with the positive figures.
The number of arrivals at lodging establishments fell 26.6 percent to 3.95 million in July. The number of foreign guests decreased by 40.9 percent, while the number of domestic guests increased by 9.4 percent.
Big disadvantage with guests from USA, Sweden, Russia
According to Statistics Austria, the decrease in overnight stays in July is mainly due to the absence of guests from other countries, including the Netherlands (-21.7 percent), Belgium (-30.3 percent), the Czech Republic ( -28.1 percent), Poland (-27.8 percent), Hungary (-43.5 percent), France (-55.7 percent) and Italy (-66.4 percent). Overnight stays from the US, Sweden and Russia even fell by more than 90 percent in July.
