After heavy rains, especially in southern Austria, the weather calmed down again at the end of the year, as the Central Institute for Meteorology and Geodynamics (ZAMG) forecast on Sunday. Storms, rain and snow are expected on Monday and Tuesday, after which the weather will improve again no later than Thursday.
Storm and snow on Monday
South of the main alpine range, thick clouds gather on Monday and it snows heavily, in East Tyrol and Upper Carinthia also heavily. In addition to numerous dense clouds everywhere, the sun appears at least occasionally until noon. However, as a result, the cloud cover becomes denser here as well and the rain spreads from the west and south to almost all parts of the country until the evening. The snow line slowly descends to positions between 600 and 800 meters above sea level. The predominant wind direction is from southeast to southwest. Strong to stormy winds blow from the northern Alps and on the eastern edge of the Alps. In the afternoon the wind slowly dies down. Early temperatures are minus six to plus four degrees, daily maximum temperatures are reached minus two to plus seven degrees.
Snow in the south even on Tuesday
South of the main Alpine range from eastern Tyrol to the east, it also snows frequently on Tuesdays, but mostly in the border area with Slovenia and Italy. In the afternoon the snow falls slowly. Further north and east there is an interaction of some thicker clouds and sunny sections. Apart from the brief rains, here it remains dry until the evening. The wind is weak to moderate from south to west. Early temperatures are minus eight to plus five degrees, daily highs are seven to twelve degrees.
Snow up to 400 meters on Wednesday
On Wednesday clouds of different thicknesses pass, the sun only appears intermittently. During the day, a few showers of rain and snow are expected in the south and southeast, and later also in the west. The line of snowfall from west to east is between 400 and 1,100 meters above sea level. There is only weak to moderate wind from a predominantly westerly direction. Early temperatures are minus six to plus two degrees, in snow-covered alpine valleys even below minus ten degrees. The daily maximum temperatures are reached from zero to seven degrees.
New Year’s Eve is often brightened with stars
On Thursday the dense, interior-alpine clouds predominate and in the south it can also snow a little, below 600 meters above sea level it can also rain. During the day, the precipitation will likely decrease and the clouds will release. From today’s perspective, New Year’s Eve is often clear with stars, only in the west are there cloud fields again. It blows from weak to moderate, in the eastern plains sometimes strong winds from west to northwest. Temperatures in the morning are between minus eight and plus two degrees, daily maximum temperatures are minus one to plus six degrees.
The new year will be hazy
Today’s New Year is a mixture of fog or high fog, extensive cloudy fields, and short, sunny phases. In the south, snowfall can start in the afternoon. However, the details are still uncertain. Wind is expected to be weak to moderate, in lively exposed areas from east to southwest. Early temperatures are minus twelve to minus one degree, daily highs are between minus two and plus five degrees.
