This year, the tree comes from the Mühlviertel. Due to the crown, there was no major ceremony. The “lighting” was done on a very small scale.
The event is part of the pre-Christmas tradition in the federal capital, usually it also represents the official opening of the Christmas market at Rathausplatz, so the number of visitors is usually correspondingly large. This year the Christmas markets, including in front of the town hall, are still closed. And no visitors were allowed at today’s brief ceremony either. At 5 p.m., the two heads of state took action and turned on the 2,000 mounted LED lights with the push of a button.
The Christmas tree at Rathausplatz comes from a different federal state every year since 1959. This year it was Upper Austria’s turn. It became a fir tree that is over 200 years old. This year, the 33-meter-high timber comes from the Mühlviertel municipality of Klaffer am Hochficht, specifically from the Schlägl Premonstratensian canons timber harvesting area.
“A beautifully lit and festively decorated tree is part of the pre-Christmas season. This year in particular, the Viennese have earned a contemplative and relaxing Advent. The tree is a sign that the city can cope with tough times now. through solidarity and togetherness it becomes stronger, “said Ludwig.
His official colleague from Upper Austria also emphasized: “In these challenging times and in a year in which almost nothing is as it should be under normal circumstances, I am especially pleased that we are delighted with our gift of Upper Austria to the Viennese can prepare.” The fir tree should act as a Christmas ambassador.
The tree was adorned by the “Beauty Docs” of the Vienna City Gardens, as stated in a transmission in the city hall correspondence. And while there are no open stalls yet on Rathausplatz, the Vienna Christmas Dream in the adjacent area will also shine bright from today. What it means: the famous Herzerlbaum also returns to delight visitors from now on.
