The premiere of a red-rose coalition is approaching, and thus the end of ten years of red-green cooperation in Vienna. Because the SPÖ will enter into government negotiations with the Neos. State party chairman and mayor Michael Ludwig announced this at a press conference on Tuesday after a meeting of the party’s expanded executive committee.
To the video:
Ludwig stressed that “a brave new path” had been chosen, “that we want to open the door to a progressive coalition.” The decision to start coalition negotiations with the Neos was made unanimously in the Presidium and “by an overwhelming majority” in the Executive Committee. The conversations with the roses should start today.
After the Vienna elections on October 11, the SPÖ had four potential partners to choose from due to the new mandate relationships, although the Social Democrats had a priori ruled out cooperation with the FPÖ. That left ÖVP, Greens and Neos, with whom exploratory talks had been held the week before. After the Turks themselves reported differences after their appointment, the Greens or Neos were recently considered realistic coalition partners for the SPÖ.
Eight years after its founding, Neos in Vienna, with the SPÖ’s decision to hold coalition talks with them, faces its second coalition. In Salzburg they have governed together with the ÖVP and the Greens since 2018. For the Greens, the loss of Vienna’s participation in the government means halving their power compared to 2014/15: they co-ruled in six countries, but in the future will probably only be three. However, since 2019 they are also part of the federal government.
Meinl-Reisinger is happy
The president of Neos, Beate Meinl-Reisinger, is delighted to want to enter into government negotiations with Neos: “I congratulate Christoph Wiederkehr and his team on this success; he will now enter these negotiations very seriously. Before eight today. Neos will founded years ago, since then we have not only shown that we can stand against it, but also that, as Salzburg shows, we can also bring our strengths to bear in a government.
In Vienna the roses come into play, although the red-green coalition, which has governed since 2010, managed to increase its majority in the municipal / state elections on October 11. From the SPÖ’s perspective, the fact that they are significantly smaller also speaks in favor of Neos: With 7.5 percent and eight terms, they are only entitled to one seat on the city council. The Greens, who have grown significantly to 14.8 percent and 16 seats, are now entitled to two. What they get anyway, but “not in charge” when the red-green ends in Vienna.
The Vienna Greens will comment on the current situation at 2.30 pm. We broadcast live.
Currently there are four countries governed without green or pink participation: In Burgenland, the SPÖ does not need a partner, as it got the Absolute there at the beginning of the year. In Lower Austria, the ÖVP has the absolute since 2018, but notwithstanding labor agreements with the SPÖ and the FPÖ, which are entitled to public office thanks to the proportional representation system. In Carinthia and Styria, the SPÖ and the ÖVP work together; in Carinthia, the SPÖ is the strongest provincial governor’s party and, in Styria (since 2019), the ÖVP.
