Sweden always took a separate path in the crown pandemic. There was no strict lockdown in spring. Only a few weeks ago, stricter measures were decided in the Scandinavian country. “The situation in hospitals is desperate”
Now the healthcare system is on the brink of collapse. “The situation in hospitals is desperate. The staff in Stockholm are on edge and need some relief,” appeals Björn Eriksson, Health Director of the Swedish capital. Routine treatments in hospitals should be avoided. Neighboring countries Norway and Finland have already offered to accept patients.
According to the Swedish Statistics Agency (SCB), a total of 8,088 people died in November. That’s the highest number since 1918, when the Spanish flu hit the country. Furthermore, this corresponds to an excess mortality of ten percent compared to the corresponding months from 2015 to 2019, according to the Swedish Statistical Authority (SCB).
“This is the highest number of recorded deaths in November since 1918. That was the year the Spanish flu broke out,” said SCB population statistician Tomas Johansson. At that time, 16,600 people died in Sweden in November.
Little contact at Christmas
Recently, the government made appeals to the population. So as few people as possible should get together at Christmas. “Avoid new contacts, keep your distance, avoid traveling by train or bus and only visit stores when really necessary,” said Swedish Prime Minister Stefan Löfven.
Sweden already had the highest Corona numbers in Scandinavia in spring, now the situation is very serious again. The number of new infections has increased since October, especially the Västra Götaland region in the west of the country recently registered a large number of new cases.
