The government wants to avoid a second shutdown and relies on more home offices and company hygiene measures. An appeal was made to the population together with the social partners.
After a high-level discussion on Sunday, the federal government and the social partners called on the population to take the increase in the crown seriously and comply with the protective measures. Federal Chancellor Sebastian Kurz (ÖVP) and Vice Chancellor Werner Kogler (Greens) campaigned for companies to put more trust in the home office whenever possible and to review hygiene concepts.
Avoid a second lock
“What we are experiencing is the beginning of the second wave,” Kurz warned. That is not a rhetorical formula, but reality. He is surprised that many do not see it yet. Therefore, it is urgent that the measures prescribed by the federal government to protect the elderly and risk groups are also complied with. The objective is to avoid a second blockade. The criterion to determine if there could be a second blockage is the situation in the hospitals. Occupancy figures are still very low, but that should come as no surprise, as it always takes some time for infections to manifest in hospital stays. Furthermore, young people are still the most affected today.
The social partners, the president of the Chamber of Labor, Renate Anderl, the head of the ÖGB, Wolfgang Katzian, and the president of the WKÖ, Harald Mahrer, also called for people in Austria to take responsibility for themselves and want to quickly define the framework within which measures can be implemented in companies. Mahrer said: “The road from the unconsciousness of the few to the unemployment of the many is short.” Anderl called for clearer regulations, for example in the home office, but also had to protect those who cannot go to the home office, Katzian added and once again called for a break for mask wearers. Many companies have very good security concepts, but some still have “room for improvement.”
Appeal to personal responsibility
“Look at you, look at me” still applies, Kogler recalled. If enough people participate, you can bring health protection, job protection and economic protection under one roof in Austria. If, on the other hand, you bring the virus to the workplace, you also put your colleagues and jobs at risk. Therefore, it is better to restrict contacts now than to have to apply even stricter measures later.
