Germany will fully open its borders with Austria no later than June 15. This is reported by the German media and the “VN” with reference to well-informed circles. Accordingly, there have been several conversations between Austrian Chancellor Sebastian Kurz, German Chancellor Angela Merkel, and German Interior Minister Horst Seehofer in the past 48 hours. The result: the borders between Austria and Germany open again.

Starting this Friday, May 15, only random checks will be carried out on the German-Austrian border, according to the UN.

Chancellor Kurz wants to outline the border solution to Germany tomorrow, Wednesday, as part of his visit to the Kleinwalsertal.

Merkel: Don’t continue checks “until the last”

Changes to border controls should always be made in cooperation with neighbors, German Chancellor Angela Merkel said Tuesday, according to information from the German press agency, from participants in a virtual CDU / CSU meeting. There will often be a two-step process. It is important to her that the checks do not continue “until the end of the day,” Merkel said.

If there is infection, there is a clear prospect for restoring the Schengen system of open internal borders in the EU, Merkel said. The most necessary thing is the opening of the border crossings as a whole. In many places, however, it will be a two-stage process. The issue will be discussed in the cabinet this Wednesday. Federal Interior Minister Horst Seehofer (CSU) wants to comment on the matter before Friday.

Lake Constance region campaigned for open borders

The Lake Constance region did not campaign again for the opening of the borders until Tuesday. “The regions around the lake are increasingly working to open their borders to their federal governments,” Vorarlberg Governor Markus Wallner (ÖVP) said Tuesday after a video conference with the heads of government of the International Lake Conference of Constance (IBK). The mood in the regions is clear.

The states and cantons around Lake Constance could no longer understand the applicable travel restrictions for various reasons, Wallner emphasized as the current IBK president. Infection numbers are comparatively low and declining everywhere, and all regions have a very good containment strategy for new infections. The strict protection and hygiene regulations also remained in force after the opening of the border. “This means that all conditions are in place for an openness to work,” Wallner emphasized.

The Governor also recalled that the Lake Constance countries are closely linked in many different ways. These are also close interpersonal relationships, as has been demonstrated in the weeks after the border closed. “The understanding of business and population for further border closure no longer exists. We need a solution quickly in this four-country region with traditionally strong exchange,” Wallner said.
