Fan fears have been confirmed: In 2020 there will be no Fortnite World Cup, instead an Epic Games emergency plan will go into effect.
For a long time there was silence about the future of Fortnite’s competitive scene in times of the Corona crisis. In April, Epic Games called for patience, on Friday night (May 1) there was an official announcement via Twitter, in which the developer revealed how to proceed in 2020. The plan looks like this: The events in which the players and the public are present do not take place. Instead, Epic Games wants to host multiple online tournaments. This does not apply to the Fortnite World Cup, because players from different continents compete against each other in the official World Cup.
Consequently, it is not possible to transport the tournament to an online environment. Given the global health situation, letting participants fly is also not an option. Epic Games has completely canceled the World Cup and thus put a conclusion to this topic. ESport athletes still have regular cash cups and the Fortnite Champion Series. Both tournament formats will continue online; more detailed schedules will follow. Epic Games is also confident that Fortnite 2021 will be played again in the form of major offline events and the world cup may return.
