The sharp rise in corona infections is now leading to action in Upper Austria: planned interventions in hospitals are again postponed.
Anyone waiting for a planned hip operation or other postponed operation will obviously have to wait even longer. Hospitals in Upper Austria reportedly want to postpone these operations, as they did in the spring.
Priority for acute and corona patients
Reason: This is to ensure that there is sufficient capacity for crown patients and acute care in hospitals. Urgent cases (eg, cancer patients, emergencies) also have an easier priority.
Jens Meier (Head of the KUK Clinic for Anesthesiology and Operative Intensive Care Medicine), Bernd Lamprecht (Head of the KUK Pulmonary Medicine Clinic) and Holger Rumpold (Head of the Ordensklinikum Linz Visceral Oncology Center) presented at detail the new measures on Tuesday:
“Performance tuning”
According to the hospitals, there will not be a complete stop in planned operations due to the increase in the number of infections. But a “drastic performance adjustment” is planned. “This will be done with the greatest possible consideration of the urgency and personal circumstances of the patient.”
Distribution throughout Upper Austria
“We have decided to distribute COVID-19 patients evenly and proportionally to all hospitals in Upper Austria according to a certain key,” said Lamprecht.
Covid’s own stations
In hospitals, separate areas are established for crown patients. However, to date it has not been necessary for any hospital to close entire service areas. The extent to which this can continue to be successful depends primarily on how the staff situation develops.
More than 100 dead in Upper Austria
According to the state crisis team, there were already more than 4,000 people infected in Upper Austria as of Tuesday (at 8 am) (4,099 cases exactly). Deaths rose further to 101. 302 corona patients are in the hospital, 30 of them in the intensive care unit.
