The Ferrari debacle in Belgium: “At the moment it is no longer possible”

It was already predictable, but now it is in black and white in the results lists. After a previously disastrous course of the 2020 season on routes where engine power is required, Ferrari is taking a step back.

In qualifying for the Belgian Grand Prix at Spa-Francorchamps, Charles Leclerc and Sebastian Vettel already have to fight for Q2, the second phase is finally the end of the line: it only starts in positions 13 and 14. Already in the final training, positions 17 and 20 had become apparent. that Ferrari is not to be expected.

Not only that, for the first time since Silverstone 2014, no Ferrari were involved in Q3. The comparison to the previous year is particularly dramatic, when Charles Leclerc celebrated his first Belgian Grand Prix victory and the Scuderia won all previous sessions. Now there are seconds left at the tip.

The winter engine scandal, when Ferrari was forced to retrofit its seemingly illegal engine, has finally had serious sporting consequences. Just before the races in Italy, including the 1000th anniversary GP at Mugello.

Vettel seems ready

A condition that only rescues drivers from humor and dismay. After classification, cameras captured Leclerc and Vettel as they grinned at each other in torture.

The four-time world champion’s first comment in front of the microphone on “RTL” also showed an annoyance that the German, who is always trying to maintain his composure, likes to hide.

When asked why the car was so slow: “The question is not that new. We have no new parts in the car. If you have ideas, you can include them. It is not that simple,” Vettel told the reporter’s caption. Kai Ebel.

“We know that we are having a bad time, we tried everything and yesterday we spent a lot of time playing. It can be said that we did not get much benefit. But I think it is not possible at the moment.”

The effort to find a combative approach remains. “We try to give everything. Tomorrow anything can happen. Who knows if it will rain. But it will be difficult.”
