Britain has more than a million people infected with corona. This left the Prime Minister with no other option. He re-proclaims restrictions on public life.
London. On the night of the day when the number of people infected with corona in Britain surpassed one million, Prime Minister Boris Johnson had no choice but to announce a new lockdown. “Nobody wants to impose such measures,” the exhausted and overwhelmed head of government told a chaotic news conference in London on Saturday. The steps were so radical that the “Daily Mirror” even spoke of a “shockdown”.
In essence, England is reverting to massive spring restrictions from Thursday: Those who don’t necessarily have to leave their home are encouraged not to leave. All non-existent businesses are closed. The hotel industry should close its doors as well as cinemas, theaters, gyms and hairdressers. Visits to other homes are prohibited, as are overnight stays.
The big difference with the first closure is that all school facilities, from daycare centers to universities, must remain open. Cabinet Minister Michael Gove reiterated the government’s determination to prioritize school operations: “We want to keep schools open,” he said. While any worker who can do so should return to work from home, the government has made an express call to continue working in industry and construction. The short-time work scheme with 80 percent continuous payment of wages by the state will run until December.
