In Trier, Bernd W., 51, ran over several people. Four died, including a baby. Neighbors describe him as a loner.
A terrorist attack or an act of political motivation seems out of the question: the German authorities have no evidence of a political background in the Trier incident with at least four dead and several wounded. The driver of the car, who caught several people in the pedestrian zone, is not classified as a danger.
However, the driver was very specific about his victims. Rhineland-Palatinate Interior Minister Roger Lewentz told a news conference Tuesday night: “The zigzag lines were specifically chosen to search for and hurt people.”
According to “Focus,” the alleged gunman is Bernd W., 51. Neighbors had identified the man based on the license plate number of his truck. A witness also said he recognized Bernd W.’s shoes in the arrest photo. “That’s why I know it was him, definitely.”
“Lived to the day and drank”
A neighbor who watched young Bernd W. grow up for years describes him as a “strange individual.” “But I often heard him yell when there was an argument at home. He was irascible and sometimes aggressive,” the witness said. Another woman said, “It was weird, but I wouldn’t have believed it.”
After selling his parents’ house, W. moved out of the Trier-Saarburg district. Several people who knew him said that he had changed homes and that he was working as an electrician. Most recently, W. was unemployed and living in his silver truck.
He had a girlfriend much older than him. “He lived to the day and drank. That was his life,” said a local resident. Within a year, W. had spent all the money from the sale of the house. Bernd W. is also said to have had a drink at his home community kebab shop on Tuesday. “He was drinking with his doner kebab gang. He got loose, got in the car and headed for Trier,” an acquaintance told “Focus.
W. posted a farewell saying on Facebook
It is not yet clear whether W. had psychological problems. Residents of nearby Zewen say, however, that the 51-year-old had an “unstable personality.” “He was beaten by his father since childhood and that was not overlooked.” Shortly before going insane, W. posted a farewell saying on Facebook: “My tombstone should say: Save your tears, where were you when I was still alive?”
The commotion in the West German city of Trier runs deep Tuesday night. Four people were killed in the Bernd W rampage, including a nine-month-old baby. Trier Mayor Wolfram Leibe said: “It is the darkest day in Trier after World War II.”
The crazed driver hit people “randomly” and ran them over with a pickup truck. Leibe said: “I just walked through the center of the city and it was terrible. It was a horror show. There is a pair of sneakers … the girl with them is dead.” Lord Mayor Leibe thanked the emergency services. There were about 700 helpers in action after the fatal trip in downtown Trier, he said. It is not obvious that the assailant can be caught after a few minutes.
“He didn’t honk the horn, he just sped up.”
A witness told Focus: “I saw countless people jumping to the side, more than 30 people were lying on the street, some of them immobile. The car felt like it was traveling at a speed of 70 to 80 kilometers per hour. Downtown was very busy. From behind it looked like an SUV, it could have been a jeep. ” Another passerby said the car also caught children.
