The district office in Bad Reichenhall issued a corresponding general decree and officially put it into effect. In the district, public life is restricted for 14 days due to the rapidly increasing number of infections. The new blockade was announced on Monday.
It was coordinated between the local authorities and the Bavarian state government in Munich. Consequently, all schools and kindergartens are closing. The same applies to restaurants, hotels, sports and cultural facilities. All contacts should be kept to an absolute minimum. The house and apartment can only be left for overriding reasons such as work and shopping.
Borders to Salzburg open
The exit restrictions that took effect on Tuesday afternoon do not affect passenger traffic, transit or shopping between Bavaria and Austria. Border crossings with neighboring districts of Salzburg remain open, including in Tennengau, which currently has the highest infection rates in Austria. Berchtesgadener Land stores remain open. However, the politicians appealed to the Austrians and Bavarians to restrict their mutual shopping traffic.
According to the district office, there is a “diffuse outbreak” with no clear sources of infection throughout the district on the border with Salzburg. The number of new infections is high by comparison. Until Tuesday, it was 236 new cases per 100,000 inhabitants per week, and so far it is well above the value of 50 agreed in Germany, from which countermeasures are increased. The number of cases has increased by 40 since Monday. In the Hallein district, the AGES board recorded a seven-day incidence of 513.5 per 100,000 residents on Tuesday.
Berchtesgaden District Administrator Bernhard Kern (CSU) described the strict measures as unavoidable. The number of corona patients at the local Bad Reichenhall hospital is increasing, he told Bayerischer Rundfunk (BR) on Tuesday. That makes it “affected” and is a reason for the hardening. But there are no bottlenecks yet. It is important to put the health of citizens in the foreground.
Hundreds of tourists forced to leave
Tight exit restrictions in the Bavarian district forced hundreds of tourists to leave on Tuesday. Berchtesgadener Land Tourismus estimated the number of tourists who wanted to spend an autumn holiday in the mountainous idyll around Watzmann and Königssee at almost 2,500. Due to the rapid increase in numbers, hotels have to close, except in the case of overnight stays for business travelers. The events were forbidden. The mask requirement will be expanded in public places and traffic routes.
The Foundation for Patient Protection views the measures in the district as a “template for possible additional regional closures.” Therefore, it must be ensured that there are enough rapid tests available for the 4,000 people who need care there. “This applies to both outpatient care and hospitalization,” said Eugen Brysch, a member of the Foundation’s Board. Otherwise, protection without isolation would not be possible. Everyone in need of care, family members and caregivers of the elderly should have a rapid test every day.
