During a visit by European Minister Karoline Edtstadler to her Bavarian counterpart Florian Herrmann (CSU) on Tuesday, the two confirmed their willingness to keep the borders open in the second wave of the corona pandemic.
That was Bavaria as a “lesson” from the “unpleasant situation” that followed the border closure last March as a “commitment of its own,” Herrmann said. People in border areas should be able to live “as normally as possible” even during the pandemic, Edtstadler stressed. The task now is to build confidence in the Austrian, German and Bavarian pandemic control measures. “Little border traffic” should be possible. It is possible to fight the pandemic and, at the same time, make possible the economy, border traffic and tourism.
Free trials for travelers
In Germany, a new quarantine ordinance is expected in the next ten days, allowing people to cross the border within 24 hours to make purchases, for example. “In anticipation” of this expected regulation, Bavaria will already handle border traffic “pragmatically,” Herrmann promised.
Regular border crossings must remain possible for travelers, schoolchildren, and students. The prerequisite is the weekly submission of a negative Corona test result. Austrian citizens could also get tested for free in Bavaria, Herrmann said. Test certificates must be sent to district administrators in Bavaria. This practice, which began in the Cham district on the border with the Czech Republic, has had positive experiences.
No restrictions for Germans
“There are no restrictions” for German citizens entering Austria, Edtstadler stressed. He asked that the regulation of border crossings in the EU be coordinated to avoid problems such as the closing of borders in March. She experienced for herself how “difficult” these consequences of the first confinement would have been for the citizens.
