The diocesan bishop of St. Pölten, Alois Schwarz, wants to start a beatification procedure for the former federal chancellor of the ÖVP, Leopold Figl. Preparations for this are already in progress, a cleric is gathering all the necessary information, Schwarz told regional broadcaster P3tv. One of the reasons given was the “conciliatory personality” of Figl.
Martyrdom of former politician ÖVP
The bishop also hinted at the martyrdom of the former politician, who died in 1965 as a result of the long-term consequences of the abuse in the concentration camp. “The man brought so much hope … He was never resentful. And he was beaten in the concentration camp that it really cost him his life.”
The process must “, of course, go its own way: to the bishops conference, approval and, of course, then to Rome,” Schwarz said. The cleric did not dare to predict the duration: “That depends on how quickly Leopold Figl gives us one or another miracle in the beatification process.” However, the bishop indicated that there were already people who had been given strength by the natives of Lower Austria in difficult situations.
