The 20 square meter rule also applies to the grocery trade.

Starting Monday, stricter rules will also apply to supermarkets in the course of business opening.

AUSTRIA. As of February 8, 20 square meters of space must be available for each customer in national supermarkets. Until now, only ten square meters were required. The reason is the so-called principle of equality: Due to the principle of equality, the same rules should apply to all traders, a spokesman for the Health Ministry told the APA on Friday. Thus, the tightening affects all retailers, not just those that can reopen on Monday after the longest closing period.

Close-to-body service providers excluded

Body hugging service providers, such as hairdressers, are exempt from the regulation. There, 10 square meters are enough for each client. The distinction is justified with the “entrance test” required from Monday. Clients must submit a negative corona test in advance, for example when visiting the salon, which is valid for a maximum of 48 hours.

Nah & Frisch: get the fit back

The clarification by the ministry on the food retailer Nah & Frisch meets incomprehension. “Nobody understands why a tightening of the food trade should be necessary here. The 10 square meters per customer worked perfectly in the grocery trade, ”criticized Nah & Frisch managing director Hannes Wuchterl in a broadcast on Friday. This is not feasible especially for small autonomous traders. Wuchterl appealed to Health Minister Rudolf Anschober (Greens) to reconsider the adjustment and withdraw it.

The CEO of Nah & Frisch, Hannes Wuchterl, criticizes that this is not feasible, especially for small and independent entrepreneurs.
