They wanted to have the last coffee before curfew and were saved in the middle of an Islamist attack: the two young Viennese Mikail Özen and Recep Tayyip Gültekin saved a seriously wounded policeman who was shot by a murderer and an old woman. Men are now celebrated as heroes on social media.
“Suddenly shots were fired, people were lying on the ground covered in blood,” Özen describes in a video posted on Twitter. “Then we helped an old woman and took her to safety. We saw that a police officer was beaten and was lying on the ground. Then we ran up to him, put him on our shoulders and took him to an ambulance.”

Cell phone video shows Özen and Gültekin on the edge of a pavilion at Schwedenplatz as they attempt to approach the officer while remaining under cover. The shots can also be heard in the video.
Shortly before that, Gültekin was shot in the leg. Both men, passionate about boxing in their spare time, report that they are doing well. “Folks, I’m fine, you don’t need to worry. We are safe at the moment. Everything is fine,” says Gültekin on Instagram.
“I want to say one more thing,” says Özen at the end of his video message. “We Muslims of Turkish descent abhor any kind of terror. We support Austria, we defend Vienna.”
