Tensions between Iran and Afghanistan – politics –

Tensions erupted between Iran and Afghanistan over the weekend after attacks on Afghan immigrants in the border area. The triggers were reports that Iranian border guards tortured dozens of Afghans and threw them into the Harirud border river. Iran rejected the accusations. Afghan immigrants are leaving Iran due to the corona virus pandemic.

Around 2,000 Afghans currently cross the Iranian border every day to reach the Afghan border province of Herat. “Iranian soldiers used shovels and gunshots to injure and throw Afghan workers into the water,” said Gulran district governor Abdul Ghani Noori. The Afghan Foreign Ministry launched an investigation into the allegations on Saturday.

According to the first results, at least 70 Afghans are said to have been beaten and pushed back into the water. Authorities in the Afghan province of Herat said Sunday that twelve bodies had been recovered from the river and that at least eight other people had disappeared. A spokesman for the Foreign Ministry in Tehran said there were no such incidents on Iranian soil.
