Teacher representatives are demanding that students aged 10 and over be required to wear a mask in class and that teachers be “financially rewarded” for their “exceptional performance.”
Keeping schools open despite the high number of infections is only possible with additional protective measures, teacher representatives stressed on Friday. The Union of Independent Teachers (ÖLI-UG) wants a mask requirement for pupils from the age of ten and the installation of air filters in kindergartens and primary schools. Thomas Krebs (FCG), the highest representative of the teaching staff of the Vienna Compulsory School, asks for a bonus for teachers.
In addition to an expansion of the mask requirement, the independent teachers union also advocates reducing contacts through class division, consultation days and parent meetings should only take place digitally, and school events should be canceled. The school management should also have to inform teachers in a place if a colleague tests positive for the coronavirus.
Unrealistic guide
The Vienna teacher representative Krebs calls for an “effective and practical safety concept for schools”. The Ministry of Education guidelines are certainly well intentioned, but they cannot be implemented in everyday school life and the suggested measures, such as ventilation and sports or music lessons outside in cold weather, are not realistic. He wants better cooperation with the health authorities in Vienna, sufficient protective equipment and that students and teachers are regularly assessed in all areas.
Cancer is directed to the service authorities; in times of the pandemic, school principals should not be constantly “cluttered” with surveys, statistics, and “currently unimportant work on various school development projects.” Teachers should also be “financially rewarded” in recognition of their “exceptional achievement in keeping schools running under these conditions.”
