The fall of the horror of Daniel-Andre Tande in the test caused moments of shock in the final of the Planica World Cup.
The 27-year-old struck with all his might and slid unconscious down the slope. After first aid, he was airlifted to Ljubljana hospital.
Norway’s head of ski jumping, Clas Brede Brathen, said late at night that the injuries were not life-threatening, but that Tande would remain in artificial deep sleep for the time being.
The 27-year-old suffered a clavicle fracture, more broken bones were excluded. The doctor in charge of the organizing committee, Tomislav Mirkovic, added that Tande was unconscious when he was admitted and that he had to be intubated and artificially ventilated.
The first test results after stabilization are very promising, Mirkovic said. Additional tests should bring more information, which should take place on Friday.
Coach Stöckl shocked
His Austrian coach Alexander Stöckl was shocked after the crash.
“It’s hard to see when a jumper takes air under his skis and turns. You can only hope for the best that everything is okay for him. That’s the most important thing,” Stoeckl said.
Geiger: “You keep forgetting: it’s life threatening”
Third-placed German Karl Geiger spoke about his conversation with emergency services. “I wanted to know right away what was going on. So they told me: You still don’t know if it will survive. You keep forgetting, this is a huge hill. It is life threatening,” Geiger said.
And the world champion in flight skiing added: “I hope he is back among the living and that he does not get hurt. That is tragic. That is a bad story. All the best to him,” said the world champion.
