AUSTRIA. Labor Minister Christine Aschbacher (ÖVP) wants to meet with the social partners for initial negotiations in September. So she wants to “pave the way for a home office law together,” she said from her department.
Modern and flexible labor legislation
“It is important to work together on this issue and find solutions together on how we can best use the experience gained from the crisis,” Aschbacher said in a written statement. The goal is to make labor law more modern and flexible to meet the requirements of digitization. For this reason, the Ministry of Labor created a working group with experts at the beginning of the summer.
“Digitization is greatly changing our world of work, the corona pandemic has greatly accelerated this development. We need modern labor legislation that addresses the needs of home offices. Therefore, I have asked the social partners to draw up regulations specific legal guidelines for home offices in the coming months, “Kurz said before his speech Friday.
Possible changes
There could be possible changes in rest times, according to the Foreign Ministry. These could be adapted to the digital age. Aschbacher said on Thursday in the “Kurier” that it was about flexibility and more personal responsibility, for example on the subject of the (usually prescribed) eleven hours of sleep “from the end of the home office to the beginning of the office in House”. A change is also in the interest of employees, the minister said. Plus, a home office flat rate could come along, taking into account, for example, managing internet costs and operational resources.
AK makes demands
The president of the Chamber of Labor (AK), Renate Anderl, has already made it clear to the APA that working from home should be voluntary for both parties. And “if someone cuts the 11 hour night break, we will definitely say no.”
