The WAC achieved a sensation on the final day of this year’s Bundesliga. The Carinthians celebrated a 3-2 victory away from the leader of the table Red Bull Salzburg. After an unspectacular first half, both teams appeared after the break. Finally, the WAC celebrated the first victory at Red Bull Arena.
Hardly any climax in the first half
Before kick-off, Dominik Szoboszlai was sacked by sporting director Christoph Freund and Stephan Reiter. The native Hungarian will leave the bulls for RB Leipzig in winter (officially: Dominik Szoboszlai will switch to RB Leipzig in winter).
The opening phase turned out to be balanced, as the Carinthia Eurofighters did not hide and played bravely. It turned dangerous for the first time after 14 minutes, when Daka was able to shoot without being forced, but Baumgartner was able to block the shot in dire need. On the other hand, Vizinger got into a good shooting position after Kofler’s long shot, but Stankovic dived hard and blocked the goal.
Subsequently, the game turned out to be evenly balanced, although the Bulls had a bit more play. But it rarely got really dangerous for WAC goalkeeper Kofler. In the end, the first half of the game dragged on to the end. Salzburg continued to win deals, but Alexander Kofler remained underemployed. Logically, the first half ended in a goalless draw.
Crazy second half with happy ending for WAC
Immediately after the restart, Okafor passed ideally for Mergim Berisha, who shot past the long corner from a sharp angle by a hairline. The opening phase of the second half was strange, because although the Bulls started better in the second half, the Carinthians scored. In the 51st minute, the guests intercepted a high pass and then quickly advanced. Through Liendl, Joveljic and Vizinger, the leather reached the completely naked Scherzer, who had plenty of room left in the penalty area and carefully sank the playing team into the far corner: 0: 1 (51). It was the first Bundesliga goal for Jonathan Scherzer. And just seconds later, after another Bulls error, Liendl started the second WAC goal: Vizinger had plenty of room to the right and crossed to center, where Joveljic headed in without being pushed and Stankovic left no chance – 2- 0 (52o).
Salzburg then switched gears and applauded the goal after just over an hour: Kofler was unable to defuse a Kristensen cross, so Mergim Berisha only had to dust from close range: 1: 2 (64th). Five minutes later, Patson made Daka 2-2 (69th) after a wonderful solo and some great preparatory work by Szoboszlai. After Patson Daka was unlucky in the 74th minute and hit the crossbar, the guests cheered only slightly later for a goal – again Michael Liendl started the goal with a wonderful pass before Peretz shot the ball to Stankovic in far corner. 2: 3 (79 °).
