The pop singer announced on Instagram that he would be leaving the jury duty on the DSDS show. The reason causes confusion, RTL distances himself from the pop singer, Oliver Pocher speaks of “absolute madness”.
Pop singer Michael Wendler (“Egal”) was a favorite on the gossip columns; now he’s been catapulted into the bank with confusing comments about Corona. His former home host RTL distanced himself Friday with harsh words from the 48-year-old and immediately canceled the planned live broadcast of Wendler’s 2021 church wedding. And the singer threatens further difficulties.
“Michael Wendler terminated our contract independently and without consultation and vilified RTL,” RTL Managing Director Jörg Graf said on Friday. “We will examine and exhaust all legal means at our disposal.”
The singer had previously announced his withdrawal from the jury of the RTL program “Deutschland sucht den Superstar” (DSDS) with a bang on Instagram. The reason: he claimed – he obviously read – that he accused the federal government of “grave and grave violations of the constitution and Basic Law” in the Crown crisis. He also accused television stations, including RTL, of being “aligned.”
RTL went on the counteroffensive
“We certainly won’t allow a hit show that millions of people like to watch be spoiled by a conspiracy theorist or generally dictate how and what we broadcast,” Managing Director Graf said of the upcoming season of DSDS. In addition, the station announced that it will devote more journalistic attention to the phenomenon of conspiracy theories in the coming weeks.
The singer, who goes by the name “Der Wendler,” had worked his way from niche phenomenon to major player in the media circus in recent years, even if ridiculed by many. With his participation in almost every celebrity show imaginable (jungle camp, “Schlag den Star”, “Celebrity Big Brother”, “Goodbye Germany”) and strange stories (“Thousands of Wendler CDs discovered in old clothes containers “), Wendler was reliably good for the headlines. The big question was whether it was always planned.
Wendler finally became a famous phenomenon when Laura Müller (20), who was almost 30 years younger than him, came into his life from Tangermünde on the Elbe. This was followed by a public love affair (“darling!”), Videos of their Florida foster home, a “Playboy” shoot (for Laura), and a civil wedding. If you are looking for the point for the final trailer, it will end in the summer of 2019, when the couple moved to RTL’s “Summer House of Stars” with high viewership ratings. From then on there were hardly any stops, the Wendler machine hummed. When the job at DSDS saluted, the hitman had risen to the top, already figuratively in a row with “Pop-Titan” Dieter Bohlen.
Advertisers are backing off
The explosion was even more gigantic when he posted his Instagram video Thursday night. His advertising partner Kaufland, who had started a self-critical Wendler campaign a few hours earlier, immediately removed this advertisement. You could, as it were, watch Wendler’s career fizzle out. One could argue that this was consistent: at Wendler almost everything was always public. But this time it was impossible to see Dinslaken’s singing freight forwarder somehow ironically.
His manager Markus Krampe tearfully sat on a special broadcast with Oliver Pocher. “It’s a shock to me too,” he said. He’s worried about Michael, but the attitudes have been manifesting over a longer period of time. The singer has become “increasingly cheeky” in his statements about Corona. “That became more and more absurd.”
When the video went online, Wendler called him. “It sounded to me like a phone call from someone calling for the last time and saying: Watch out, I’m finishing my degree now, I’ll never go back to Germany,” Krampe said. Furthermore, Wendler told him that he had been on the phone with Attila Hildmann all night. Vegan cookbook author Hildmann calls himself a “far right” and a conspiracy preacher.
However, Wendler knows sudden departures well. In 2014 he voluntarily left on the fourth day and rushed to the RTL jungle camp. Then he wanted to go back.
