Second division leaders SV Ried leaves no stone unturned to return to the field this season. The joint request with second Austria Klagenfurt for a Bundesliga upgrade to 14 clubs will be the subject of the general meeting of the 28 clubs from the two federal leagues next Thursday. “The proposal may already be voted on, but I’m not sure about that,” says chief financial officer Roland Daxl.
A meeting of the Bundesliga supervisory board took place yesterday, today the twelve clubs of the upper division meet. Without a doubt it will be about the application of Ried and Klagenfurt. “I hope there will be official talks between the Sky television channel and the Bundesliga by Thursday,” said Daxl. The television contract with Bundesliga rights holder Sky is an essential financial aspect for Bundesliga clubs, especially in the current economic crisis due to Covid-19. As reported, Sky has an exit clause when changing modes.
Daxl and colleague Robert Tremel report positive signs in an OÖN interview. “SV Ried and Klagenfurt had a very positive conversation with Sky last week. With Klagenfurt and Ried, two important customer areas would be added for Sky. Our stadiums would be a positive for the television partner when it comes to the quality of the transmissions. ” Daxl says. At SV Ried you want to get back on the field as quickly as possible, regardless of the request to upgrade the league. “Even if Ried and Klagenfurt could advance, the other Bundesliga clubs would have great advantages if they continued their league. We as second division teams would not have played a competitive game for six months,” said Tremel. Therefore, SV Ried will apply to a club conference on May 12 to make it easier to continue playing in a “mini-league” of teams that are still willing to play, as well as the possibility for individual clubs to end competition ahead of time without penalties.
The clubs drew up a plan for the continuation of the season on Monday, making June 26 the last start to end the season before the end of July. To date, however, there has been no approval for the second division to extend the season beyond June 30, most of which clubs would have to apply to ÖFB, and no government license to play before 31. August. From an economic point of view, it is also unclear whether the league will start again.
