The Statistics Austria figures for the summer semester show a different picture regarding the crown-related effects on domestic tourism. As a result, between May and August, the number of overnight stays in hotels, guesthouses and vacation apartments fell by a national average of 33 percent to 39.5 million compared to the previous year. In August alone, the minus 11.2 percent was slight thanks to many local guests.
Ranking of federal states
Vienna was hit particularly hard: Reserves fell 82 percent. Carinthia ranked first with less than 15 percent and a total of 6.9 million overnight stays, Styria with less 18 percent (4.4 million overnight stays) and Burgenland with less 19 percent (1.3 million of overnight stays).
Growth in August
In traditionally the most important month of the summer season, Austrian tourism was able to record a new record of 6.62 million with a significant increase in overnight stays by Austrian guests of 22.6 percent. Regarding the overnight stays of German guests, the increase was 2.8%.
