On the Traunsee, the Ebensee water rescue team had to take on board a surfer who was in an emergency due to the strong wind around 1 pm He must have remained unharmed.

Storm warning until evening

In three districts of Upper Austria, the “orange” warning level remains valid until 18:00 on Saturday: in Gmunden, Kirchdorf and Steyr-Land, meteorologists still expect a strong foehn with peaks of up to 90 km / h, on the foehn lanes of the high mountains sometimes even more than 100 km. / H. In the affected districts of Kirchdorf, Gmunden and Steyr-Land, fire brigades had to relocate to repair storm damage and clear traffic routes. Additionally, road and rail connections on the Koppenpass between Obertraun and Bad Aussee were blocked, according to the Upper Austrian Firefighters Association.

In Salzburg, 27 fire brigades were deployed in 46 missions until just before 2 p.m., the state fire command reported. More than 400 men, especially in Pinzgau and Tennengau, were busy clearing the traffic routes of fallen trees and securing roofs. In addition, isolated power lines had to be repaired.

Twelve year old struck by a tree

In the Innsbruck metropolitan area, firefighters were busy on Friday night: in Rum, Tyrol, a twelve-year-old girl was hit by a falling tree and, according to police, came out with minor injuries. The girl was in front of a residential complex around 7:35 pm, her mother was alerted by a scream and discovered her daughter under the fallen tree with a trunk diameter of around 20 centimeters. The twelve-year-old boy was admitted to Innsbruck University Hospital and was temporarily there for further observation on Saturday.

By Friday afternoon, two weather-related emergency landings of sport gliders had already gone well. Two 20-year-olds from Garmisch (Germany) who started a round in the Inntal Valley had to interrupt their flight near Kematen (Innsbruck-Land district) and fall into a field. A 43-year-old glider pilot from Innsbruck had to make a landing on the mainland in a field between Rum and Thaur (Innsbruck-Land district) a little later. All the occupants of the aircraft were unharmed. The foehn weather lasted Saturday morning and prompted numerous fire operations due to falling branches. At this time, no personal injury or major property damage has been reported.

Two 15-year-old sailors put themselves in danger

Due to the foehn storm in the mountains of Salzburg, two 15-year-old boys were in danger at Lake Zell on Saturday morning. The two young sailors could no longer reach the shore with their catamaran with winds of up to 93 km / h. The ship eventually capsized during a turning maneuver. Due to an ongoing operation, a water rescuer immediately realized the plight of the young men.

Despite the adverse conditions, there was a 7 to 8 force wind with strong waves, a water rescue boat and a police boat quickly managed to reach the two 15-year-olds. “The waves were good at 1.50 meters high at this point,” Michael Kling of the Samaritan Association’s water rescue service told APA. The two sailors were recovered unharmed and their capsized catamaran was washed ashore.

The emergency services had originally been alerted because a boat moored on the shore threatened to fill with wind and waves. “We got the boat out and we got it out,” Kling said. And as police reported, a rowboat with two occupants could still be safely guided to shore by the police boat.

At low altitudes in Innsbruck, Bad Gastein and Abtenau peaks were found between 90 and 100 km / h, in the city of Salzburg, in Golling, Saalbach and Schröcken from 70 to 80 km / h.
