The 88- and 85-year-old hikers, who come from the Vöcklabruck district, first stopped at a managed hut in the alpine pastures in the afternoon and then descended towards Burggrabenklamm. In the Unterackeralm area they turned too early and into steep and impassable terrain. They continued their descent, each one slipping a bit and suffering abrasions. Faced with a rocky wall, they could not advance any further, “they stayed there,” said the mountain rescuer.

29 mountain rescuers seek hikers

A relative of a hiker alerted emergency services at 9:25 pm because the relative had not returned home that night and could no longer reach him on his cell phone. The battery of the pensioner’s cell phone was dead. A total of 29 mountain rescuers from the local offices of St. Gilgen, Strobl and St. Wolfgang set out with two mountain rescue dogs in search of missing persons whose location was unknown.

Finally, some rescuers on the mountain noticed the glow of a flashlight and heard screams. Around 4 am, the volunteers were able to reach the Austrian Highlands. They provided first aid and secured them both with the gorge rope. The retirees were taken to the valley in an emergency vehicle, where they were treated by the Red Cross.

Rain hinders rescue operations in St. Gilgen

Use was difficult in the dark and on alpine terrain, which also got wet and slipped after midnight from the rain, Grabner said. Fortunately, the temperatures outside were mild and the strong thunderstorms only started in the morning when the Austrian Highlands were already rescued. The hikers were only lightly dressed in shorts and shirts.
