Bures sparked an internal party discussion

The decision on whether or not the SPÖ will send its own candidate to the 2022 federal presidential election has yet to be made, as the federal party made clear on Monday at the request of the APA. Earlier, the second president of the National Council, Doris Bures, had made people sit down and take note of the proposal that the SPÖ could resign its own candidate in 2022 and support incumbent Alexander Van der Bellen.
As the party told the APA, the federal presidential election is expected to take place in the fall of 2022 and the president of the federal party Pamela Rendi-Wagner will present a proposal to the party executive at the appropriate time. Currently, the focus is on dealing with the crisis in the crown. Bures has expressed his assessment of what is “absolutely legitimate,” he said.
The head and governor of the SPÖ of Carinthia, Peter Kaiser (SPÖ), took the same line: “The next federal presidential elections will be held in 2022, so this question does not arise today from my point of view.” The SPÖ will announce a decision on this in due course. At the same time, Kaiser sprayed the current federal president Rosen: “Yes, Alexander van der Bellen is a very good federal president for Austria. He has shown this since he took office, unfortunately in several difficult situations for our country.”
For several state parties of the SPÖ, it is still “too early” to make a decision for or against a Social Democratic candidate in the 2022 federal presidential elections. That will take place “together in the federal party” and “in December 2021 at the earliest, “Lower Austrian state party chair Franz Schnabl said at the APA’s request on Monday. The topic is currently “not yet”.
Bures’ statement, according to which the SPÖ could support incumbent Alexander Van der Bellen, irritated many at the time, Burgenland SPÖ regional manager Roland Fürst told the APA. He had many conversations with officials. They were “unanimously of the opinion that it is still too early to worry about running for federal presidential elections,” Fürst said. This is an important political decision that will be discussed more widely in the party and decided appropriately in the federal party executive.
In the Viennese SPÖ one referred to the federal party, according to which no decision has yet been made on a candidate of their own. At the same time, it was stressed that the head and mayor of the Vienna SPÖ highly values Michael Ludwig Van der Bellen and cooperates with him “in an excellent way”. Ludwig visited the incumbent last week, that is, when he was sworn in as governor. Van der Bellen had congratulated the city chief on the SPÖ’s result in the elections, “in which he did very well, if I may say so”.
Bures, who had been swapped repeatedly as a possible candidate for the post of head of state, told “ATV Aktuell” over the weekend in response to a question: “I think the Social Democracy, if it runs again, will support Alexander Van der Bellen converts “.
